Hi All,
Need help to understand the correct test setup and procedure for testing
DC power on the PoE Cable in 10/100mbps PoE cable.
1. CAT5 cable carries data on 1,2,3 & 6 wires
2. Power supplied on 4,5,7 & 8 wires
One of the test labs was mentioning to test PoE DC pairs as AC power line
test and surge test on the DC power rails is done as per the below picture.
. Surge pulse applied is 1.2/50us ( 8/20us) ( class 2 , differential mode
across +ve & -ve supply rails) . Same way POE Input AC power line test is
conducted.
In this case Source impedance of the Surge Generator is 2ohms instead of
42ohms ( generally used for Unbalanced lines , data pair of Ethernet).
In this test , EUT was damaged, when surge directed towards EUT and PoE
got damaged ,when surge directed towards POE.

I need help to understand , If this is valid Test to do ? Should the
EUT/POE withstand surge pulses applied in this setup ?
Should the DC power over Ethernet be treated as Unbalanced lines for
common mode surge or as AC/DC power line ?
Any pointers will be really helpful.
Thanks in Advance.
