So, for some, wearing a confederate flag is a reason for someone to hurt
another person? Being offended gives cause to assault someone? The ignorance
continues!
The confederate flag today is a display of heritage, not of hatred. In fact,
the hatred that the people of the South did have, was directed at "Yankees."
The Civil war started because the southern states declared themselves
independent by secession. ("United we stand. Divided we fall.") Slavery was at
the
base, but economics was the actual reason for the break. The North was
beginning to move into the industrial age. In the Midwest, wheat was the
primary
crop. Machines had been developed to harvest wheat but the South depended on
slavery to harvest their primary crop ... cotton. (That is not a defense for
their ignorance ... it is merely historical fact.) I doubt the average
southerner even really understood the underlying differences. They probably saw
the
secession, then the battles, and were as patriotic as we all are so they joined
the fight that their brothers were joining. One thing is for sure though ...
they hated the "Yankees" well before baseball was even invented . A friend
of mine told me about his grandmother's grave in Kentucky. The top of the
headstone comes to a point and the words read, "No damn Yankee will sit on my
grave!"
So ... If anyone should be offended by a confederate flag, it should be us
northerners. Many of our ancestors died fighting against the South. I'm not
offended though. I've never looked at the Dukes of Hazard and thought racism...
Have you? Nazi symbols, on the other hand, have been primarily used to display
racism and hatred. That makes them different things all together. I think
the inclusion of the Confederate flag as a symbol of hatred is completely off
base and is actually being used as just another way to keep certain people in
the lime light, who without that lime light would have no source of income.
Its a little sad if you think about it ... So many people offended by so many
"things" when hatred and racism still exist on every side of the coin, and
"the coin" is not the Mason Dixon line. I'm sure there are many southerners who
are quite offended as a symbol of their heritage is systematically removed
from existence only because some people cannot distinguish the difference
between pride and hatred ... the result of which will only be another reason
for
hatred. My ancestors all came from Germany. Germany has been the enemy twice
over ... When you see me drinking a beer and chomping down on a bratwurst
covered with sourcraut, will you hate me for that?
