Again, here we are. The dog is not to blame. Every person who ever touched that dog is to blame. And the latest owner will pay for her foolishness with her wallet, for the rest of her life. A story......true, I was called to address it........ A family moves to a new town in NJ. In order to help the child adjust to the new school, her mother brought the dog to class. The dog was a Bull Mastif. He had been kenneled for about 3 months and had only rejoined the family about a week before being taken to the school. In the classroom, the teacher made no attempt to control the kids, and the owner ignored the dog. One child, a friend of mine's child, bent over towards the dog. She had her head bit severly and had stichtes as a result. I was asked, as a trainer, to give my opinion of the incident. I said both adults were liable. Neither the kids nor the dog were controled. Control is vital when ANY DOG is mixed with a bunch of kids. Shortly after this event, I was asked to bring the 3 dogs we had to our son's class. We opted to be outside, since this was not done far enough in advance to clear it with all the parents. We, under my supervision, had the 3 dogs, 2 GSD's and a Rottie, held by myself and my husband, and the kids came up 3 at a time to pet the dogs. I talked about proper handling of dogs, and training. And I explained why we had to have an orderly meeting of the dogs. All went very well, expcept the weather, it was a normal early spring day in the DC area, damp and dreary. But the kids had a great time and the dogs behaved well, though they did not feel driven to meet all these kids. It is the humans' job to control the dogs, and to keep all the other lives around any dog safe. Train your dogs and your kids to behave and no one will get hurt. BTW, there is a Ch Akita near here that is clearly not the safest dog I ever met, but his owner works with him and socializes him daily. This dog has become very attached to the baby born after he finished. He hangs out in Coconut Grove on Sunday's if he is not at a show. sheila Cynthia VanDenBerge <vande001@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: How horrible for everyone involved! I can't imagine the pain and horror that this poor woman must have felt. As a note: this brings to mind one of the things that was discussed at the January board besides "you know what". Clubs need to understand and be aware of their sphere of responsibility and how easy it is to open yourself to a lawsuit if something like this happens on your showgrounds. The parent club will be sending a booklet to each regional club that details how to best protect ourselves. I suggest that we take these recommendations to heart even though some of them seem to be rather silly or innocuous. I hope that this poor lady is ok, although from the description, it does not sound like her foot will be able to be repaired. This fuels the BSL and makes us all look bad. What a tragedy for the woman and all of us in this sport. I truly hope that it sends a bigger message to rescues of all kinds to really only rescue and rehome the animals who can be rehabilitated into good pets and get them in proper homes. This dog had no business being with someone who wasn't a responsible owner. And maybe no business being kept alive. <<> From: "Marge Passalacqua" > Date: 2007/03/26 Mon PM 10:55:39 EST > To: undisclosed-recipients > Subject: Fw: woman viciously attacked at dog show in florida > > -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Fw: woman viciously attacked at dog show in florida I was judging at this show on Sunday Pretty bad scene. Today, Sunday 3/25/07, I attended the Space Coast Kennel Clubs All Breed Match in Melbourne, Fl (near Cocoa Beach). A woman was viciously attacked by an Akita. Facts: · This was a rescued Akita that had been abused in its previous home and had a history of aggression. · The owner brought the dog to the show to see if it would have any aggression issues. She asked several people to â?ocome at the dogâ?? to see if it would become aggressive! (they wisely refused) · While she was talking to a group of people, she had the Akita on a loose lead and was also holding another dog. She was not paying attention to her dogs so she did not notice the Akita posturing to attack another dog in the group. · The Akita suddenly attacked the other dog. · The owner of the other dog tried to break it up and put her foot out to stop the Akita. · The Akita grabbed her foot and dragged her and she began screaming. The dog mangled her left foot so badly that it literally was hanging on by nothing but a small piece of muscle and was facing sideways in a spiral. · I and another registered nurse went to her aid as the dog let go because it had her shoe in its mouth. We immediately elevated her leg and applied a tourniquet with a dog lead to prevent her from bleeding out and going into shock. Then we splinted the entire leg to prevent the foot from literally falling off. The paramedics arrived and took her to the ER. The dog was taken by Animal Control. It is absolutely incredible that anyone would bring a dog with a history of aggression to a dog show with children and other dogs around that could be attacked. It also was amazing that the owner actually asked innocent bystanders to rile the dog to see if it would attack!! Then, on top of it, she had this dog on a loose lead and was not paying attention to its behavior. This is such irresponsible dog ownership that words alone cannot describe. The amazing fact is that her young daughter is a junior handler, so this owner is not new to dogs! Please pass this story on. We must reinforce at matches that dogs be kept close to the owners side and observed by their owners at all times. People tend to get lax at Matches and it can end tragically!
