Either way it's not a pleasant situation for anyone.

I agree it is not a pleasant situation but I would rather withhold the blue and
quietly explain to the handler why I withheld. I have seen judges (not GSD)
have a class of 4 or 5 in winners, then stand there in the middle of the ring
and announce that they are withholding points due to lack of merit. Now that to
me is embarassing a group of people and not my way of doing things.
