[ SHOWGSD-L ] why people don't stay

Sometimes it is difficult to know just what to say. A casual friend of
mine just purchased a very sweet German bred female. She is a real
charmer, but he insisted that he was going to show her at a Specialty.
She did not do well, even though I found a handler for him. I finally
asked him why he wanted to show her, and he said he felt that any dog
can become a champion. He is beginning to see that this is not
true.......He is losing on a regular basis, but she is still the
sweetest bitch imagineable. Why can't he just be pleased that she is
mentally and physically sound, and enjoy her?
Another friend of mine recently paid $5000.00 (yes, thousand) for a male
who looks like a bitch from ten feet away. She was over herding with
our group this last weekend, and when she saw my dog (Booker) she told
me that the next time she wanted to buy a Shepherd she would definitely
contact me. For those of you who don't know, Booker is our AOE Select
Am.and Can.CH.Elvaston's Southern Byrne, PT, TC, and he is quite a
masculine looking fellow. Why didn't she ask me about getting a dog
before she committed to this one? Who knows? I have known her for
several years. (her dog did quite well when Sandy tested him)
I think that many times some of the newer people in the Breed get an
attitude that they don't need any help to find a superior dog. I have
seen this many times through the years, and was probably guilty myself
early on. When they get a dog that is non-competitive, they try for a
while, and then fall by the wayside. Too bad not to have found a
trustworthy mentor. Many of these folks would probably still be showing
dogs. (and winning)
