I'm lost...what brought this up?
Of course the owner/co-owners "own" the dog. It's never bother me when a
handler referred to a dog as "my 12-18 month old dog" or "my special".
At the end of the day though, I think most handlers realize that are hired
by the owners and it is "their" dog as long as there is the perception
(rightly or wrongly) that "they" are getting the job done. If they aren't
getting the job done, then it becomes someone else's dog <G>.
As far as a breeder is concerned, I wouldn't think an owner would mind
hearing a breeder say "that's one of mine". I was speaking to a breeder of
dals not too long ago who said they had "one if mine" in handling class. I
knew what she meant <G>.
Heck, my house call vet takes ownership of my dogs:) Shannon saw Solo's
pic on facebook and refered to him as "one of hers". It's never bothered
me...she was his first vet and did the puppy check at my house...LOVE
her!!!!! I'll have to ask Priscilla if it bothers her but I really doubt it
would:)
My mother takes ownership too...years ago just by coincidence the owner of
her health club happened to purchase a puppy sired by one of my boys. They
struck up several conversations. I guess he had a question about ears and
was going to have his vet (a dane person) do "something" to them. Mom was
aghast! "We" don't have an ear problem she said. LOL!

I think that anyone that becomes emotionally involved with a dog, is much
better for that dog, be it a handler, co-owner, breeder, etc. When one
cares, they tend to go the extra mile.
As a teacher I try to get the most from all of my students, but there are
just some you become emotionally involved with and maybe, tend to go the
extra mile with them. Isn't that what a good mentor does?

i suppose as a teacher who taught 4400 kids over the years i learned right
away or as one kid once put it to me. "you don't buy my clothes". A
handler has resposibility for a dog in much the same way. But you learn not to
get emotionally involved with a child that is not yours.as an attorney you
might want to win a case very badly but it does not help to get emotionally
involved. the owner of the dog is your client not the dog. the dog is the
clients property.
