I really, REALLY tried to stay out of this one. Let's remove this
from any person we all know or know of, to the general very good
question that Bonnie asked.

First of all, there are large and small kennels and breeders. There
are people who breed excellent dogs in their back yard (I DID! LOL),
people who breed their neighbors dog to their dog and have perfectly
good pups who are raised to be perfectly good dogs. There are people
who deliberately cross breeds for a deliberate purpose (stock herding,
forinstance). There are people who breed many litters, do NOT raise
them in their bedrooms and the dogs are perfectly fine when in their
new homes. These breeders, no matter how many litters or dogs they
have, are NOT substandard. They are not substandard, even when they
sell to pet stores, by the way. Not our way of raising dogs, but NOT
substandard.

Then there are substandard kennels. Dogs who are indeed bred and
raise their whelps under unbelievable conditions. Fed and watered
with an eye to profit rather than health. Kept in deplorable
conditions, on wire broken crates, 3 or 4 to a cage, no exercise.
Bred without any concern for health or the pups health and sold to
pet stores who care only that the pups sell, not for their healthy
lives.

And those substandard kennels can be large or small, lots of litters
or a few hidden away in back yards. IF we just can get away from
using the term "puppy mills," it makes the difference much more clear
and takes one more weapon away from the ARs.

Remember, Big isn't Bad, BAD is BAD.
