[ SHOWGSD-L ] whites

I feel I must weigh in considering I own both white and "traditional" GSDs. To
me the color of the dog does not make the breed. Is a white dog any less loyal
than a black and tan? Is a black GSD any less intelligent than a sable? The
talk of separating a breed solely based on color is dumb. Yes, it has been done
before but there are also breeds that just show all the colors together so that
argument can go both ways. Two black and tans can produce a white, similar to
how two black and tans can produce a black. And white is a masking gene that
masks the actual color of the dog. It does not directly lead to paling. A white
dog can mask any GSD color.
I've actively shown both whites and "traditional" dogs. I have the only known
AKC and Canadian Kennel Club champion in recent history with a white parent. A
dog that has gotten compliments by many GSD fanciers and judges alike. So
should she be considered a different breed or a mutt because her sire was
white? Is she any less a champion because of that white parent?
The GSDCA holds a responsibility to the GSD, regardless of the dog's color. I
would rather see the white dog stay a DQ in the standard than be separated into
something it isn't. The club has a responsibility to the standard as well. If
the dog is a DQ in the standard, what would make it OK to be a different breed?
And what about the Livers and Blues? Should they be separate breeds too?
Regardless if you like the whites, they are part of the history of the breed
and helped shape the dogs we love today.
