[ SHOWGSD-L ] what is a line?

Someone suggested that a lister ask their breeder about her lines. Everyone is
always talking about knowing your lines and what faults lines produce.
So when do you have a line? Is it after 5, 10, 15 years of breeding? Is it
when you consistantly produce dogs that look the same, have the same "type?"
If you have a bitch and you do outside breedings all of the time, to different
studs, it seems difficult to build a line -type. It's an outcross every time
unless you are linebreeding. I do know breeders who have been at this for 25+
years. However, they don't have a single foundation bitch that their dogs go
back to, and if you look at the dogs they've bred over the years, they're no
consistancy. They breed winners, but but the dogs don't have the stamp that
tells where they come from.
They can't tell me what's in their lines because they have a mix of too many
lines.
I've have looked at all of the websites of folks whose kennels are listed
either on the showgsd-l site (and the link works) or in their signatures (and
other gsd sites as well). I've noticed that some have a certain look to their
dogs, and it's easy to tell. Some have kennels with dogs that look like they
were all purchased from different places across the world. None have the same
type, and there seems to be little consistancy (I am not saying that they
aren't good dogs).
