Great explanation !  It also states the logic of the large
entries.                                     Carolyn

Actually, I'd like to step in on this one....... and this is a rough draft
typed out quickly so please don't question spelling errors.  I CAN SPEL L... I
j ust have dyslexic  fingers .....

SV style shows and AKC style shows are VERY different.  AKC shows are
shows...meaning a competiton for points toward a championship.  SV style shows
are for breeding stock evaluation.... a VERY different concept.  Judges don't
just have to pass an open book test and sit at ringside a few times..... they
are SPECIALISTS!  Dogs are not only judged on overall structure against others
in the ring.  They are also evaluated on pedigree and in older dogs, their
producing ability and are placed from 1st to last in the class.  Those
placements aren't just 1st thru 10th ... they come with a 'show card' that
provides a written evaluation of the dog ... whats right and whats wrong along
with a rating of excellent, very good, good, or not good.....  judges take time
with every dog and explain their placements.  Folks understand WHY dogs are
placed as they are..... t hey don't have to guess..... or depend on a schnauzer
judge who wants to do t he Herding
 group to evaluate their GS
 D.  Stud dog owners help their puppy owners to show and fight for one higher
position in the ring - even if its next to last.  Each move up in position
moves 'dad' and 'mom' up also as better producers so breeders have a vested
interest in the placement of t heir 'kids' and really show it!!  T hey also u
nderst and that GSDs are not robots.. running around in a circle for no
reason.  T hey not only allow, but encourage, double handling to keep t he dogs
going which gets t he entire family involved.  Grooming is not allowed so
faults can't be hidden ...... blowdryers are banned f ro m t he showgrounds and
can get you kicked off j ust like a pinch collar is supposed to.....  GSDs are
supposed to be a wash and wear breed and they expect teh dog to have an oily
guard coat !  Y our dog is really evaluated by a breed expert and you receive
an evaluation of your dog... not a 'could be my winner at another show' or in a
group of also rans and invited
to wait on t he sidelin
es or exit t he ring while the 'good' ones are evaluated...........

I can understand why new folks enjoy bringing a picnic lunch and their dog to
the local show....... While politics DOES play a factor in top placements....
everyone gets a fair evaluation of their dog...... and t hey are included in t
he stud do g's or breeder's group of owners so t hey feel that t hey are a part
of t he action... not t he new kid in town.  Lastly, every progeny exhibit ed
at t he show must come back in for t he stud dog or brood bitch evaluation
classes so folks are not encouraged to show 'fillers' beca use every progeny
comes back in good and bad....   t here is no picking and choosing going to
keep teh not so good ones out  so you get a better look at what that animal has
produced.....   and t hey are careful not to misrepresent puppies t hey
sell.......

You may not appreciate the style of dogs being exhibited but they are an
inclusive bunch who encourage new owners and families to participate..... and
support them in their efforts.

Here's an analogy:  My nephew, who is five, is on a ski team.  At  the end
of the season they had some kind of a race event.  He called my  parents,
ecstatic, that he'd won a medal.  The results/times were  on line, so Dad
printed them out.  Well, heck, everyone who managed to  stay upright won a
medal!

That's OK when you're five. I get it.  I don't get it at fifteen,  twenty
five etc., any more than I "get" taking  a dog to the breed ring  that
doesn't have a prayer.
