[ SHOWGSD-L ] was rethinking spaying & neutering, the boys

I urge companion puppy buyers to leave their boys intact until 2 - 2 1/2
years old. It's even in my puppy packet. I hate what a male neutered at 6
months end up looking like, tall w/o the bone they should have had.
Do they listen???? Some don't.
I don't know who is worse when it comes to "testicles". In my experience
a handful of women can't WAIT to have the dog neutered, don't like how
"they" look, (say what???????), don't want marking (we don't have a breed that
marks with just a MINIMUM of training)...boy could someone have fun delving
into THOSE emotions....no?????
Then there are the doggy daddies who feel like they are the ones being
castrated....geeze. Then you have the supposed articulate parents who don't
know how to explain the occasion foolishness a puppy can go through at
puberty to wide eyed children. I remember one doggy daddy calling me when his

month old puppy took a pillow from the couch to have his way with it and
whispered into the phone "why is he doing THAT?". I whispered back
"because it feels good". (And seriously...a man had to ask that question?
REALLY?????) "Take the pillow away and don't make a fuss". And this guy is a
parent to human children???? Scary.
But we can talk until we are blue in the face; once a companion puppy
family takes their dog, it's all out of our hands. Charge a good price,
insist
on a good fence, give vet references to better vets and do a lot of
praying.

If I got a dog of a breed that was supposed to have distinct secondary sex
characteristics (GSD's)even for a pet I would not neuter early. I'd want
my dog to look like a mature specimen before I neutered. I know several
people who have regretted neutering early because their males never developed
the secondary sex characteristics their standards called for.
