Kathy,
You are SOOOOOO right.  Of the 25% that H$U$ identifies as purebreds being 
released to shelters, most are pit bull mixes or chihuahuas mixes.  It is very 
much a cultural thing that a targeted educational champaign would go far to 
solving...but that would not serve the AR interests of no anmial use.  This is 
in the West and Southwest...so don't know other parts of the country.

  Ellen you are RIGHT.  The reason GSD s or mixes supposedly end up in shelters 
so much is because they are MIS CLASSIFIED.   This also explains the high % of 
insurance company bites because of supposedly GSDs or mixes.  I have to grit my 
teeth when I check the Riverside County and LA and Orange County sites for 
GSDs...they report ANY DOG as a GSD if : it has erect ears, one or both, has a 
black face or black saddle or in the end, anything they don't know what else to 
call it.  I kid you not , I have seen TERRIER Xs and Pit xs and white dogs and 
BRINDLES AND HARLEYS ALL CLASSIFIED AS GSDS.  ACK.
  The lazy bastards are too ignorant and uncaring to actually LOOK at the dogs 
an educate themselves as to what it may be other than a GSD.  Makes me furious.
  85 PERCENT of what we see in shelters here are Pit , or Pit mixes  and 
chihuahuas...when the owners get busted for dogs, they cut them loose on the 
street and a few months later they have more.
   Many result from the illegal alien explosion in this area.  They don't abide 
by the law so dumping a dog? BFD to them.   DON'T GET ME STARTED . We have the 
"vatos "and the" homeboys "and the white trash that think a PB is "cool" so too 
a rottie or mix, and we see them and their progeny OVERWHELMING the shelters 
here.  
  GSDs real ones , are a very very small percentage of the group...too much 
still, but very small.
