Ellen....If GSDs were not a serious problem in the shelters, then why do we 
have an entire forum to display the ones that are in need? There are MANY other 
forums out there, including Germanshepherds.com. If you need to see proof of 
the potentially THOUSANDS of GSDs (YES...PUREBREDS)...that are in shelters 
nationally...you need only to involve yourself in rescue. Many, many shelters 
do not even HAVE a petfinder link. I get photos from volunteers who have found 
our information via the internet...GSROC has pulled and rehomed 300 GSDs last 
year...Diane Roberts I believe is in the 150 dog range for one year...NBGSR has 
pulled more than 100 dogs this year...BYB bred dogs, maybe...but purebred GSDs 
none the less...With these figures, how can you possibly make the statement 
that there is no crisis for GSDs at this time? LHSH has financially assisted in 
rehoming  over 260 purebred GSDS...some of these are from American show lines! 
We know this to be a fact...it
 is not supposition. 
I dont know about the "southwest"...and perhaps where YOU live, there is not a 
preponderance of GSDs in need...that does not mean that there is not a national 
crisis.
We are working frantically to extricate a horrendously emaciated GSD in SC at 
this time..
She is definetly a purebred GSD. Left tied outside with no shelter, water or 
food...left to die. 
When you make uninformed statements attempting to deny the numbers of GSDs in 
need, you can  be inadvertently causing the death of another GSD by turning 
someone away from Rescue who may have previously considered it.

Well I challenge anyone to go on petfinder.com and give me a zip code where they
verify GSDs are a serious problem in shelters.  I check petfinder.com at least
twice a week and I find only three or four real GSDs in a 300 mile radius and
three of the four are with our local rescue who is affiliated with our club.  I
guess the southwest is making better progress than other areas.

  At the shelters we go to they rarely ID a dog as a purebred though many are.
We have rescued several GSD x Collie mixes that were purebred coated GSDs most
recently I rescued a Chihuahua Mix that is actually a pure bred Papillon. I have
no idea where the animal control officers come up with the breeds they list
these dogs as mixes of. Anything black is a Lab mix and anything black and tan
is a GSD mix and Two Black GSDs we rescued that were PB Black GSDs were rescued
as Lab mixes. It gives people a false sense of what is actually in shelters
being shelters are full of mutts when this is not the case at all - at least not
around here. Sadly 10% or more of those PBs are Pitbulls and another 5% are
Beagles. every time I go to the shelter we work with the most I go through the
shelter with one of the staff and help them correctly ID some of the dogs so
they can be adopted for what they are. Yes, I agree that there are some groups
(More rescues than shelters) that lable a dog PB
  who really is not and that is just plain wrong especially the Pitbull mixes
labeled as Boxer mixes. Then the people adopt them and can't keep them
because they don't have the proper fence or can't afford the liability
insurance or even if they live in an apartment that has restrictions might be
evicted if they keep them. However, one can no longer say shelters are mostly
mutts, sadly it is no longer true. I would say I have seen the trend changing
slowly to more and more PB dogs over the past 5 years from 20% to more like 50%
and rising.
