Actually, AKC Judging Procedures state:
"All Champions of Record that are eligible to be entered in Best of
Breed/Variety competition are automatically entered in competition for points
toward the “Grand Champion” title if they are entered in the Best of Breed
class at a dog show. Dogs and bitches that have earned their Championship and
are moved up to the Best of Breed class as well as winners from the
Non-Regular* classes would be eligible to compete on the day. Neither Winners
Dog nor Winners Bitch is eligible to compete for “Grand Champion” points
regardless of the circumstances. Class dogs winning BOB/BOV or BOS will not
prohibit the awarding of Select Dog/Bitch** to eligible dogs in the ring.
Judges and stewards are reminded not to inquire about eligibility. Any Grand
Championship points awarded to class winners, non-Champions or dogs that are
otherwise ineligible will be administratively disallowed by the AKC."
Not eligible is WD and WB.

Actually, if you read the AKC instruction regarding Selects, it says (something
to the effect of) after choosing BOB, BOW & BOS, the animals eligible for the
Select award should be judged. The way it is written, sounds to me like you
ask
all that are not eligible to retire and then judge the animals that are left in
the ring.
