Definitely can be hereditary. My CH Mattie was delivered c-section (so
no, her momma didn't cause her umbilical hernia by tugging, getting too close
etc). Mattie had a litter of 11, delivered naturally, right into my hands
(and I do the cords) and we had a few. CH Fannie had one and produced
them. Halley had one, again, I deliver the babies, and her daughter Marci
also has one. Every puppy in the litter doesn't have them, who knows the
transmission?
None of them ever had to be surgically corrected, but yes, in those cases,
hereditary.

I had an interesting discussion with my vet last night about umbilical
hernias. He said he doesn't feel they are hereditary. Now, the ones in the
groin area, he does feel are inherited, but not the belly button ones. He
said he sees many bitches with hernias and doesn't see it in the babies. He
knows on the internet there are sites that claim it is inherited. To
give him credit, we do in Lancaster county, Pa. home of the puppy mills so
I'm sure he does see puppies from moms with problems. What do you all think?
Have you ever bred a bitch with a umbilical hernia and did she have pups
