As usual, the topic has strayed somewhat.
I don't think that the breed should be judged standing...but that is
pretty much where you are going to assess breed type.
However, if it looks like another breed, or lacks the elements that make
it a German Shepherd of correct type, then movement is NOT enough.
Sorry, ladies. Long legs, no depth of chest, extreme tuckup, and a
number of other things..these are not what the standard calls for. If
the best moving dog in the ring has those things, you'd better keep
looking, because it isn't good enough.
The question began as a way to get people to stop being so nasty to
one another...but the replies and the directions the question has taken
us have been interesting. If all you care about is sidegait you've
missed the boat. If you don't think the breed has a lot of dogs being
shown who don't possess the elements of good type you'd better look
again. Not the majority, thank heavens, but enough of the dogs that win
are faulty in type...and type faults are more serious than movement
faults in ANY breed. No living fence, no sheepherding...they have to
look like German Shepherds first--otherwise why do you want them?
Peggy
BTW - I haven't seen anyone belittle sidegait at all. You must be
reading different posts.
