Your dogs are show dog first and last, mine are family protectors first and
show dogs last. While I could loose my champion (the one I am trying to get) I
will know that they died in the line of duty.
I cannot be saved by a dog in a crate. And I am approached enough to make me
careful. I have been told many times that I look too mean to be bothered, but
I also get men starting conversations with me for no reason all the time. If I
am that damn cute, I want protection when I am alone at night and especially on
the road. I did not travel at all, alone, until I got Dexter, the first best
road dog. Now I have driven from DC to Chicago, after moving to Miami, I have
been all over the east coast of the state, and back to DC with my kids, and to
St Louis. I would not have done ANY of this without a dog to look after my
safety.
I worry constantly when my mom is on the road without a dog. When she
brought Kit to me she drove home alone. At well over 50, I will say no more
mom, I was not happy until she called me from home.
While she must keep her dogs in the crate on the road, at least they made
noise when people approached. It was enough. I do keep a crate in the van,
and I have used it for my dogs, at rest stops and such to keep the van in one
piece. But I perfer to keep a dog loose at all times for my protection.
If we die, we die together, and therefore happy.

On April 28, 2000 I was on my way to the All Breed shows in Eastern
Washington on Interstate 90, pulling a trailer with my Chev Van.
My GSD bitch Kiki was in her crate tied down in the back of the van. a wind
gust hit from the side and turned us over onto the roof. The trailer stayed
hitched and when we came to rest blocking, the entire freeway, all the
windows on the left side of the van were gone! more than one inch of the lip
around the 500 crate had been ground off on the freeway surface!
Kiki was uninjured, the van and trailer were totaled. Kiki went on to the
show with her handler Julie Hamasaki who was a few miles behnd us in
traffic. She took reserve to two 5 point majors and finished her
Championship the following week.
If Kiki had not been in her crate secured to the floor of the van she would
have been killed!
Our dogs always travel in crates. When my wife needs protection she can
reach back and open the crate door.
