I think that List administration needs to step in and censor outlandishly well-written,luscious attempts to undermine my never-ending diet such as this post. tom elkins Firethorn Temple -----Original Message----- From: showgsd-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:showgsd-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Pinehillgsds@xxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, June 11, 2008 2:49 PM To: noroda@xxxxxxxx; wynsum@xxxxxxxxxxxxx; showgsd-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] Re: tomatoes... I stopped at my all time favorite farm stand yesterday:) It's no more than a shack that can be pulled by a truck off to the side of the road. We were in the fourth day of our heat wave and the heat came up from the ground and made everything look a little wavy. The strawberries smelled so sweet in that heat it almost made your teeth hurt. The strawberries are plentiful, the asparagus is perfect this time of year and the tomatoes have just started. As the farmer made my change I noticed his well worn hands were stained from berry pickin' <G>. The best thing? Sitting there between the rows of produce, shimmering in the afternoon sun like the finest crystal, homemade strawberry jam in shiny new ball jars. (If you don't know what ball jars are, I can't help 'ya <G>.) His wife had just made it the night before. ("Keep it cool when you get it home" I was told. "Yes sir!") Four jars now sit in my refrigerator. Three are promised, lol. Later in the year I might be lucky enough to stop after she's made peach or blueberry, but summer is here for sure with the first strawberry jam! I remember the first time I bought a jar. I went back the very next weekend to buy some for family and friends. I complimented the farmer's wife. "Gosh, it's so good". "It's not too sweet", she said, "I don't like a lot of sugar". "No 'mam" I replied. This is the fourth year I've made their acquaintance:) "How was your winter", I asked. "Cold" he replied. I was just so darned happy to see him:) I usually keep one or two jars of his wife's jam in the refrigerator unopened for a gray February day when it just feels like spring won't ever come. When you break the seal on the ball jar and hold the jam close to your face, you are immediately transported to a hot summer day when the fruit smells sweet:) Me? I love being able to buy produce from the hands that picked it:) My tomatoes, perfect things, heavy for their size sit on my kitchen window sill waiting to ripen. I have some lovely maple smoked bacon (also produced locally). I'm craving a BLT on fresh sourdough:) It is absolutely a blessing to know where your food came from, and not one that I take lightly:) The asparagus? Roasted w/ a little olive oil and sea salt. I need to remember to tell him how good it was...gosh I hope the corn is early this year...
