Just one of those "food for thought" comments:
Everyone agrees that under their white coats (caused by a separate masking
gene) they are genetically colored GSD ... black/tan, black, sable ... whatever
...
No where in the standard does it mention a white masking gene, or any gene for
that matter ... only COLOR!!!
Ergo, I say that since the GSDs with the masking gene are in fact colored dogs,
that under the current AKC Breed Standard they ARE allowed in the ring without
any type of fault whatsoever!!! :)
