I guess it's just easier to say the dog has a nice short powerful 
hock........than it is to say 
that  dog has a nice Tarsus attached to a nice short metatarsal with nice thick 
tight Phalanges....<G>

  I believe in technically correct terminology the "hock" is the joint or ankle 
that connects 
  the tibia and fibula to the metatarsus (or rear pastern). We often refer to 
the whole assembly 
  hock joint and metatarsus as the hock.
