Our policy is that we want the dog back! In August, 2006, I drove from
Maryland to Canada to pick up a dog purchased from me. The owners were getting
a divorce, and the husband was starving the dogs at the house. Breeders were
scrambling to pickup dogs purchased from the them. That place was a mess!
I currently have a dog with EPI, returned to me because the owners didn't want
to deal with his diet restrictions. He is a really nice dog, and can live here
forever, if needed.
There is clause in our puppy contract:
Seller MUST have first right to repurchase the Puppy (at a price not to exceed
the original purchase price, if the Puppy is to be sold), or to recover the
Puppy (if the Buyer is giving it away) should the Buyer decide to sell or give
away the puppy at any time. Seller shall be notified by certified mail of the
Buyer's decision to sell or give away the puppy. Buyer must provide the name
and phone number or email address of any person to whom the Buyer intends to
sell or give away the Puppy, so that the seller may have the opportunity to
determine the suitability of the proposed new owner to care for the Puppy.
Under NO circumstances is the puppy to be abandoned, given to a Humane Society
/ Animal Shelter, or breed rescue group. The Buyer agrees to pay the Seller
$1000.00, in addition to what was paid as the non-breeding price for original
purchase of the Puppy, to constitute the full price of the Puppy, if the Puppy
is found to have been abandoned, given to a Humane Society / Animal Shelter,
or breed rescue group. Buyer agrees that the Puppy is being purchased for
personal ownership and not on behalf of a third party.
Even if the contract is not legally enforceable, it might make the buyer think
twice about just dumping the dog at the pound. If every breeder would be
responsible for their pups, the world would be a better place.
