    The little spots can be caused by tick bites.  For some reason,  
the site
  of
    the bite can change the color.....on black, the spots are seen as  
some
  white
    hairs.     Nothing scientific here,  just my observation.

Girls, you would have LOVED this:  Awhile ago, an older male being  
shown was shown without the grey muzzle he usually had.  (It was  
suddenly black!)  He also suddenly had black splotchy marks on both of  
his front legs.  One story was that he had gotten "into the  
blueberries" and the "blueberry dye" wouldn't come off.  Another story  
was that he got out into the road and the black leg spots were  
actually tar.  Everyone knew it was just a case of a "botched muzzle  
job."  But people are SO creative with their reasons why dogs look  
different!  <VBG>
