I had this happen to Ducati. What we finally determined is that it was heat.
We had a terribly hot summer and at one point or another he got hot! (Please
no e-mails about why did he get too hot, why wasn't he in air conditioning,
etc. This dog was very well taken care of, had a good kennel with a roof,
misters, etc. and I loved him dearly.) Anyway we didn't know for sure why he
didn't have sperm but thought the heat could be a possibility and waited for 90
days. It takes about 90 days for new sperm to appear and they did. He sired
litters after that and had a good sperm count. During that time I was
devastated and it was very hard to wait, all the while checking. I was elated
when I finally saw even a few new sperm, they're so cute!
Of course this is just one possible reason and there are others but this is my
experience.
