Hi Paula, Smoke free Terry here :0) 29 days What our regional club does is have the judges sign a contract that states that they will do the temperament test as outlined by the GSDCA. If the parent club decides that the temperament test is too much stress on the dogs or the GSD image we will still require that it be done at our shows. The people who breed good sound dogs will not be bothered by it. The ones who do not trust their dogs to pass will not enter. So be it. When people ask me why we do this test I tell them it is because we care so much about temperament in out breed and that I wish other breeds would do the same. Too eliminate it now with all of the talk about viscous breeds is just plain stupid. All this talk about the temperament test sure tells you who is worried about temperament doesn't it ??? :0) I still agree with the Captain. With out breed type it should not be called a German Shepherd Dog. With out sound temperament it should not be called a dog. Terry in Sunny Oregon headed to AZ anytime now. I will bring you back the sun :0) Paula Cooke <psharp212@xxxxxxx> wrote: Not if they are on a certain class of drugs, or watching their owner outside the ring. Most judges spend 10 times as much time side-gating dogs than on checking their temperament. This tells the public, and breeders, what trait we value in our dogs, and what we breed for. Most, definitely not all, but a majority of the breeders, owners, and judges that I personally know, value sidegait and type over temperament. I will give you one group of people in the sport that really value temperament, and those people are handlers. I know of one handler that has the integrity to turn down any opportunity to handle a dog with poor temperament; that is actually putting his/her money where his/her mouth is.
