The breed standard for GSD namely it is PROUD, NOBLE, ENERGETIC, WATCHFUL,
DETERMINED, ALERT, FEARLESS, LOYAL AND OBEDIENT as we all know. Descriptive
words that should give anyone a pretty clear picture of how our shepherds
should look and behave at any given time. As judges they must appreciate and
REWARD sound temperament when found and just as importantly RECOGNIZE and
PENALIZE faulty temperament in our rings. Of course if a judge overlooks
shyness, fearfulness, unprovoked or inappropriate aggression, avoidance, or
cowering in a GSD fails not only in their responsibility to the breed, but
the society we all live in. Of course the more shy and fearful a dog is, the
more likely to be easily stressed by things in its environment, and the more
unpredictable and of course dangerous its behavior. I realize the way you
approach the dog makes a whole difference. Walking slowly approaching the
dog with no confidence makes most dogs think you're possibly up to
something. That can change the whole attitude of the dog at that moment.
Walking confidently right up to the dog makes a big difference in how
they'll react to that judge. I know I've had some obedience judges act
afraid/unsure of my GSDs in a trial on "stand for exam". I've noticed every
time the dog knows the difference in that person.

What you see outside the ring is not always what is going on, especially on
film.
I remember talking to Bob Penny about that. We both agreed, when we
approached a dog, we knew if it was or was not sound. The temperament test
is for those outside the ring. We who claim to be judges, can determine who
is not sound. I remember a show I did and the open dog pulled away. So, I
went to check the other four dogs, who were not close enough to the standard
to put up. So, I did something I seldom do, when back to the first dog. He
stood fine, and in winners, I did him again. I didn't think he wasn't sound,
but his performance bothered me.
I did put him up. I heard he finished about thirty days later.
In the ring is the proper person to judge temperament. I have faulted dogs
that stood, but showed fear. If you don't want my opinion, don't enter under
me.
