Just curious...... should the campaign be successful to "get rid of
petshops"..... where do you expect people to get puppies? Because they WILL.
And it won't be from the "fancy", since they refuse to breed more than the
PC "one litter per year".
People want puppies. They will get them from somewhere. Some people are
patient enough to be on some breeder's waiting list for more than two years.
Most are not.
The last figures I saw showed that about 60% of all households in the US
have a pet. About 65 million are dogs and about 75 million are cats. The
majority of those pets are purebred.
The best estimate (and an estimate is all we can get) is that about 9.6
million animals enter animal shelters per year. Most of those are feral or
free roaming cats. Those numbers are decreasing every year (without MSN I
might add). The vast majority of those in shelters are NOT purebred.
What this tells me is that MOST people that buy a purebred, from whatever
source, KEEP the dog.
California has become one of, if not the most, restrictive states in the US
for breeding. Guess what they now have? They have a REAL problem with
black market smuggled puppies from Mexico. Remember...producing fewer dogs
will not stop people from wanting a puppy. They will get them from
somewhere.
