In response to what has been written below, I couldn't disagree more. First because a really good one IS recognizable from the young classes. Age has nothing to do with it, quality does. I personally have put up puppies at Futurities that went GV & GVX from the puppy classes (under 12 mo). I placed a 6-9 puppy RWB at the Nationals and later she went GVX. They did not fall apart, they were too good for that. Another puppy I recall went WD from 9-12 and later WD at the Nationals....and so on. A really good one....is a really good one at any age, period!!! The Futurity/Maturity is an important "Breeders Show." We get to see who is producing what and the direction we are going. It is extremely prestigious to win a Futurity or Maturity (assuming the quality of the Judge is decent). It would be really wonderful if it wasn't so expensive. Perhaps not allowing dogs to be handled for a fee might be a consideration. Something like not being paid as a football player until turning pro. The Futurities would be singled out as a non-income producing show for individuals. (Now this thought will make me popular with the handlers.) Throw enough ideas out and see what happens, but don't give up this wonderful tradition.
