The GSDC of Greater Raleigh welcomes your German Shepherd at our events,
including meetings. However, the following rules must be followed:
Anyone with an aggressive dog (one that growls, snaps, or is in any way
aggressive towards other dogs or people) must be muzzled.
Dogs will be free of loose hair and external parasites (fleas or ticks).
Please brush your dog prior to bringing it to the meeting as we must clean up
the room after we are finished.
For the safety of all members, guests and their dogs, it is strongly
recommended that all dogs be kept up to date on their vaccinations. ALL
dogs
that are old enough, MUST have a current rabies shot.

MARCH (FEBRUARY 28, 2006) MEETING INFORMATION
The next meeting of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Greater Raleigh will be
held on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2006 in place of the meeting being held the
First Wednesday in March, at the Exchange Park at 7:00 PM. This is a ONE-TIME
meeting CHANGE, to accommodate our speakerâ??s schedule, Mr. Robert Slay, who
is a noted German Shepherd Judge, and will be speaking to our club about the
German Shepherd standard , and what he looks for when judging German
Shepherds in the conformation ring. This program is being given in preparation
for
our clubâ??s specialty shows taking place on Friday, March 24th and Saturday,
March 25th 2006 at the Jim Graham Building at the NC State Fairgrounds.
This
program will include a lengthy question and answer time so you can ask Bob
specific questions you have about showing, judging, etc. Our next meeting
will
be held the 1st Wednesday in April.
Mary Bjelica, our program chairman, will also be bringing the pictures that
were taken at the last meeting, a couple per person, of our dogs.

should relax and get used to the idea." - Unknown

MEETING MINUTES FEBRUARY 1, 2006
Program: Mary Bjelica planned a fun meeting to photograph our dogs and make
a frame for the photos. Her husband Pete kindly agreed to do the photos of
dogs and/or owners and we were able to assemble the frames from pre-cut
pieces. The photos will be ready for pick-up at the next meeting.
Business Meeting: DUES are due now- send to Sarah Bridges at 12737 Wake
Union Church Rd., Wake Forest, NC 27587 -- $20.00 for individual and $25.00
per couple. Also please note that the next meeting will be Tuesday, February
28 instead of Wednesday, March 1 so that we could schedule Robert Slay as the
speaker. He is a conformation judge and will have lots of good information
to share as we get ready for our spring shows.
Sarah talked about insurance for the show - we will need a binder from the
insurance company to prove coverage. Bill Pfeiffer talked at length about
the dog food companies and what they will provide for our show as well as what
they were providing to the National show. Also Nationals will start on a
Wednesday instead of Tuesday next year.
Three new memberships were read tonight.
Treasurerâ??s Report: Sarah reported $3,474.84 plus checks given to her
tonight for dues. Remember- please get your dues in as soon as possible.
Also,
we need trophy pledges to be sent to Sarah for our Spring Show trophies.

BE CAREFUL WITH ALL DOG TREATS, NOT JUST GREENIES

Friday, December 23, 2005By Anya Sostek, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

In less than 10 years, Joe and Judy Roetheli went from owners of a dog with
bad breath to creators of the top-selling dog treat in America.
But dog lovers giveth and, on the Internet at least, sometimes they taketh
away.
In the past few months, chatter about Greenies dog treats -- and their
potentially deadly consequences -- has spread furiously throughout the Web.
But,
according to many dog experts, the toothbrush-shaped treats pose no more of a
danger than any other edibles that don't dissolve in water, including rawhide
and pig's ears.
Greenies are compressed chew treats that promise to help clean a dog's teeth
and freshen its breath. The treats were developed by the Roethelis to help
combat the bad breath of their Samoyed, Ivan.
The treats were the first ones certified by the Veterinary Oral Health
Council, and last year overtook Milk Bone to become the top-selling U.S. dog
treat, according to a study by Euromonitor International.
But these days, many users of message boards on Web sites like _Dogster.com_
(http://dogster.com/) describe the treats as "dangerous" and "unhealthy."
Anecdotal information from veterinarians and dog owners is clear: there are
dogs who have died after ingesting Greenies.
Whether Greenies are any more or less dangerous than anything else dogs
ingest is less clear. With the hundreds of millions of the treats in
circulation,
are some dogs just bound to have freak accidents while eating them? Or are
the treats inherently prone to cause digestion problems?
Michael Schaer, a professor of veterinary medicine at the University of
Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, said he operated on a Lhasa Apso with
a
Greenie stuck in its esophagus just last week. After thousands of dollars in
medical bills, the dog died of aspiration pneumonia.
Even though he's seen similar problems with Greenies "several" times, Dr.
Schaer said he regularly feeds the treats to his own golden retriever.
The danger with Greenies, said Dr. Schaer, is that dogs will not chew the
treats sufficiently, leaving open the possibility that they might get stuck in
a dog's esophagus.
"If they don't chew them very, very thoroughly, that's when they get into
trouble," he said. "It forms a bolus of foreign body material that just sits
there like a boulder."
But Dr. Schaer stressed that Greenies are no more dangerous than rawhide or
pig's ears. "I don't want to implicate Greenies as being public enemy number
one," he said. "It's a brilliant product."
That's not the view of Jennifer Reiff and Michael Eastwood, a married couple
in Manhattan. Their dog, a miniature dachshund named Burt, died this July
after complications from the surgical removal of a Greenie blocking his
intestine.
"There shouldn't be any problems once it was chewed sufficiently and
swallowed, yet it blocked his intestine and he died 48 hours later," said Mr.
Eastwood. "He was throwing up blood, vomiting blood and breathing blood
bubbles --
it was the most horrible thing."
Mr. Eastwood is suing S&M NuTec, the company that manufactures Greenies, for
$5 million in punitive damages. He said he decided to sue after the company
offered him a settlement of about $8,500 ($6,500 for veterinary bills and
$2,000 for the cost of a new dog), on the condition that he would not discuss
his dog's death.
"There was no admission of any fault on their end," he said. "We weren't
interested in getting our money back. We were interested in getting the
product
recalled."
Each bag of Greenies includes a warning: "As with any edible product,
monitor your dog to ensure the treat is adequately chewed. Gulping any item
can be
harmful or even fatal to a dog."
In response to inquiries about deaths from Greenies, the company released a
statement reiterating that its treats should not be fed to "dogs less than 6
months old, dogs less than five pounds, and dogs who gulp food and treats."
The statement also said that "Though injurious incidents with our product
are rare, more often than not, the pet is not fed according to our feeding
directions."
In his lawsuit, Mr. Eastwood asserts that approximately 60 to 80 dogs have
died from Greenies. An investigation by Seattle TV station KIRO-TV found nine
people in that area who said that their dogs had died after eating Greenies,
or other dog treats modeled after Greenies.
But none of the four veterinarians in the Pittsburgh area interviewed for
this story said that they had ever seen a dog that developed problems after
eating a Greenie.
Sherwood Johnson, a veterinarian with Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialists in
Shaler, often has dogs referred to him with esophageal or intestinal
blockages.
He said that rawhide and chicken bones are the most frequent culprits for
internal blockages. He's also removed a bottlecap, a bolt with the washer
still
attached, socks, underwear, gloves and even an entire bathroom rug from the
insides of various dogs over his 11 years doing endoscopies.
But never a Greenie -- which he regularly feeds his own dog.
Regardless of whether it's a Greenie or any other dog treat, Dr. Schaer said
that pet owners should monitor their dogs carefully while they eat,
particularly if their dog starts to gag, salivate or act restless afterwards.

"This is something that occurs with enough frequency that everyone should be
careful," he said. "Anytime any dog starts to look even a little bit
abnormal after eating one of those things, seek emergency veterinary
assistance. Do
not wait."

THERE CAN BE A SERIOUS DANGER IN ANY AND ALL DOG TREATS AND TOYS THAT THE
DOG (ANY BREED) CHEWS U P AND SWALLOWS. I DO NOT LET ANY OF MY DOGS CHEW UP
TREATS UNLESS THEY ARE UNDER CLOSE SUPERVISION. PAT

FLEA PROBLEMS
THIS IS ANECDOTAL INFORMATION. Use your own judgement.
I DO GIVE BREWERâ??S YEAST AND GARLIC TABLETS TO
MY DOGS HOWEVER (Pat)
My neighbors all have a terrible time with fleas in the summer.. My dogs
are on Brewer's Yeast and Garlic tablets and nary a flea! I have had to
Frontline them one time in the last 4 years. I quit using all the common yard
sprays
for fleas.........they have become immune to them. The Number ONE ingredient
in ALL organic flea sprays in ascorbic acid..Vitamin C. Got to looking and
Fruit Fresh, that you put on fruit to keep it from turning dark....is straight
ascorbic acid. Put that in the garden sprayer........and we treat the yard
several times in the summer......no fleas!!!!!!!!!!!!..and this is flea
country for sure......... I believe it is the combo that works........brewer;s
yeast and garlic and the Fruit fresh

Treasurerâ??s Report: Financial condition of the GSDCA Treasury remains
solid. Liquid assets rose $26,000 in 2005. Final closing for 2005 will be
completed for the April 2006 Board meeting. The Nationals were positive by
$6,500.
Preliminary closing results were presented. Currently our net financial
improvement for 2005 was $21,693. This will be affected by closing year end
journal entries and will most likely be lower.

AKC Delegate Report: The following change in the Rules was passed at the
AKC Delegates Meeting this month. The Event Committee is the same as the show
or bench show committee. The AKC used that language to cover all events rather
than having a bench show committee, obedience trial committee, tracking test
committee, Hunting test committee, etc." The wording, which is to go at the
end of Chapter 11, Section 8A, is:
"Any dog that in the opinion of the event committee, attacks any person or
dog, resulting in an injury, and is believed to be a hazard to persons or
other dogs, shall be filed with the Executive Secretary of The American
Kennel
Club. The disqualified dog may not again compete at any AKC event nor be on
the grounds of an AKC event unless and until, following application for
reinstatement by the owner to The American Kennel Club, the owner receives
official
notification in writing from AKC that the dog's eligibility has been
reinstated."

Budget and Finance Committee: The Budgets for all Committees were reviewed
and a preliminary budget was developed. At the January Board Meeting, after
committee chairpersons are approved, Gary will share with each chairperson
their proposed budget. At the April 2006 meeting, The Budget and Finance
Committee will review any changes submitted by chairpersons. A final budget
recommendation will be presented to the Board in April.

Futurities: There will be a link on the Parent Club website dedicated to
information related to the Futurity/Maturity system. Forms, closing dates,
fees, judges, site information, and Specialty shows in conjunction with
futurities are an example.
Changes in requirements to be eligible to judge Futurity:
A. Candidates that have previously judged a Futurity/Maturity in the US or
Canada will not be required to have attended the GSDCA judging seminar.
B. Candidates may now judge 25 total dogs in an AKC sanctioned all breed
matches. (Rather than 25 Herding Breeds.) Bios of judges that have
assignments
will also be listed on this Futurity page.

want you to own your dogs let alone exhibit them in our sport. They are
Animal Rights Activists. Their groups all have names that are shortened with
acronyms. Remember there is a huge difference between Animal Rights and
