Subject: [ SHOWGSD-L ] re; Senior GSD needs SAVED - warning, this will tick
some people off....

Just how much do people expect RESCUE to do?
I am spending $56 a day board for 8 rescues. Most then need spay/neutered
(discount rate of $75) shots, food, etc. Well, they ALL need food. Some weeks
I

drive to the boarding kennel 3-4 times. 94 miles RT. Sometimes I drive
hundreds of miles (to meet someone who has also driven hundreds of miles) to
pick
up a dog facing euthanasia, and when I get there, the dog really isn't a
purebred GSD, even though it looks like one in the picture. What can I do,
discard the dog because it isn't purebred? I cant. So it comes home with me.
I

have a youngster here now with an upper respiratory infection. We had less
than

24 hours to decide to take her or she would be put down. She "might" have
been exposed to canine influenza at the shelter. Her meds alone were over
$40.
She will then need to be spayed, shots, etc.

Rescue dogs have destroyed my kennels, my crates, my carpets, my deck, my
doors and screens. One dog not only destroyed his crate in my car, AS I WAS
DRIVING down the interstate, but also tore the back seat upholstery in the
process. I spend hours a day on the phone or Internet or in my car doing
rescue

things. I'm tired, and I think I can't do this any more. I cant take another
dog. And then I get a phone call or email. This dog will be euthanized in 24
hours can you take it? And I try. I am getting 3 mix pups whose 9 1/2 year
old

(yes, I typed it right) heartworm positive mother was taken into rescue.

Susan and I have been doing rescue for over 10 years. Liz Hampton joined us
this year. (she has had one kennel mangled so far) We got a nice foster home
this month. (one) The Pikes Peak GSDC donated $200 to our rescue. Patty
Korsch has graciously donated a crate. The average price we get for a 1-4
year
old
dog is $150. Dogs 5 and over we get $60. If we get purebred pups (rare),
they are more. It offsets some of the cost for the older dogs.

No, I don't take senior dogs any more. They don't do well in boarding
kennels and they take longer to find a home for. Time, money and space that
could
be used for 2 or 3 other dogs needing rescue. Its not that I don't feel for
them, I do. Most are wondering and watching and waiting for the only owners
they have ever known to come get them and take them home. The sadness is
their
eyes is evident. We try to get them into sanctuaries if we can. We do
referrals for them. But what kind of society do we have when people dump
these
dogs
that have given them nothing but love and loyalty all their lives?

I'm sorry, tell me again about getting those "good size fees."

NANCIE: I am in absolute awe of your work with Rescue and ALL those others
out there who Rescue... I have proposed in the past and I will try again, to
request of the GSDCA Board...That everyone of us , who are members of the
GSDCA, which includes me, who has a Dog at Stud,and/or pups for sale, etc.
should
all send extra dollars in with our GSDCA Membership Fee to be given to
Rescue..

I have considered, and it was once proposed by someone else, that every
time our Stud Dogs Sire a litter that lives to be registered, an extra $5.00
should be included with the GSDCA Membership Dues.. and also an extra $5.00
sent for each of those litters.. that we have whelped at our homes...

That way, those who are supplying fewer Shepherds that could possibly, end
up in Rescue, pay the least and those who are producing more, pay the most..
I am of course, open to all suggestions...

But we need to do all we can to save the Breed. I realize that many of the
non-members of the GSDCA are the main source for those who end up in
Rescue... But if we start trying to blame 'the other guy' nothing ever gets
done, and
we can do THIS to HELP!!! I would like to see the WDA adopt this idea
also... Any opinions or advice??? Barb Williams
