I am definitely counting my blessings of family, home, furry friends, and
job. We have room in Brighton and one extra dog run if someone wants to be

I'm
hoping that the prediction that Rita hits land at a category 5 doesn't
happen...but I'm glad we're acting as if it will.
On the home scene our 13 month old, Della, seems to believe she's given
birth to a round, plastic squeaky toy. She had her first cycle in mid July
and
had no contact with males. She's fussing and anxious and carries it with her
everywhere curling up with it in a chair licking and caring for it.
TOTALLY non typical behavior for this girl. Being girls too, my daughter and
I
recognize the hormonal behavior but since this is our first (and maybe last)
intact bitch we've never seen a dog do this. Has she lost it?

Hi Karen!

This explains the aggression.....it was just normal maternal aggression,
only someone forgot to tell her that she wasn't a mom! False pregnancies
aren't
uncommon and chances are good that she'll have repeat false pregnancies once
she's had one. Does she have milk? Now that you know that 2 months after
her season, she's going to lose her mind :-), you can be prepared for it. I
would be careful on the amount of correction that I give for maternal
aggression...it's like they can't help it. They still MUST behave themselves,
but I
give more leeway....more guidance less correction, and a lot more management
on my part. I avoid situations that I know could be a problem....you know
she'll come out of it in a couple of weeks. She could be more dog aggressive
at this time, so don't be surprised if she gets into it with your Sheltie.
She may be fine, just watch for it. If she thinks the Sheltie is going to
hurt
her "puppy", she may get VERY possessive. Again, this isn't something that
I would treat as "normal" possessive aggression (which I don't allow at all),
but this is hormonal. Don't ignore it, but avoid the situations where it
could be an issue. Give her the toy and put her in a crate for a while.
She'll be happy because all she wants right now is to go to a den and raise
her
puppies (toy).....

Cassie was funny because altho she's even with the REAL puppies, she still
had a black rubber squeaky toy that was a "puppy" (she's never had a false
pregnancy). This "puppy" went everywhere with her, she never put it down when
she was outside to go potty. She's now back to normal and the toy is just a
toy...
