I do love the this list and reading what everyone is thinking, and I own and
love American lines. I especially like reading Linda's articles(and thank you,
I didn't mean to call her Kathy) because she doesn't say one is better than the
other it is all a matter of taste. When I first got a shepherd, I took the
GSDCA's?standard with me and tried to find a puppy that looked like a picture
of the 3 month old pup in the illustrated standard. The dog on the front of the
illustrated standard is what?I picture when I think of a German Shepherd.?When
I see an over reaching dog I see a dog who lifts in the front and plants their
front foot on the ground?a good 5-6 inches in?past of the nose. Maybe I am
wrong. I see dogs who put their back foot up past the point of the shoulder,
that looks wrong to me. To me that is also over reaching. Too extreme. Maybe I
am wrong, that is why I look around and try to understand. I think no matter
what "line" you like, conformation should be about our
breeding stock and who cares if it is "American" or "German".? I personally
don't care for?some "German" dogs because they are roach back and coarse,to
straight stifled, I like the beauty of the American lines. But having said that
some of the American lines are to "refined". The males are not masculine and
the bitches are to small. Our specialty dogs should not be any more "extreme"
than our all breed shepherds. I thought a "specialty" was a show that
specialized in German Shepherds, not a different dog. For for me, learning as I
am, I am sorry if?I?was or am?to general, but how do I get to be more specific
if I don't state what I am seeing and try to get someone to show me what is
correct or not? What questions do I ask to get me the answers? If those who
have been in this breed 30 yrs or better, are having a hard time understanding,
where does that leave me? I hope this list is about discussion and learning.? I
have been reading it and enjoying the discussions and now I a
m not sure if you are really wanting?me to ask questions and state my limited
opinions. If I don't say what I am thinking how do I know where or if my
thinking is wrong? Or not even wrong maybe just not clear?? If 35% of our
judges are breeders, we need their help to make sure the other 65% of the
judges know and respect the standard.?How do those of us?who are?new, know who
is a good judge and who is not? I do belong to the GSDCA and to?the local
kennel club(before we moved to Texas) and to be?honest, I didn't run across to
many members who were willing to talk to a "shepherd" person let alone fill me
in on good and bad judges.?? If I can't ask here, where do those of us?fairly
new?into this breed go to find answers, gather knowledge, keep the breed we all
love healthy and moving forward?? How do I not be general? I read many books on
the German Shepherd, not just a few articles by Ms Shaw. I have limited time in
this breed but I am also?fairly intelligent and I think I can
be an asset to the breed I love.? I feel I know just enough to be dangerous
and it really leaves me open to quite a bit of criticisim from those who know
more, but I will take the risk if it makes me a better German Shepherd owner.
Pam

      Hi, Pam,
This list should be a place where you can discuss issues of
structure and conformation. I hope that it can be just that for you. But
first, you must realize that this is a list for American conformation.
Perhaps you have been looking at Linda's illustrations leaning toward
the German lines ------material for some other list, not this one.
You painted your issues with a very broad brush, better that we
address them one at a time. Our breed is extreme in many ways compared
to other breeds, but other breeds are extreme in many ways as well.
It is any extreme within our standard that is faulty. So, that being said,
and taking one issue at a time, to what are you referring as over-reaching?
That might be our first subject for discussion. And you are correct; there
are judges out there who obviously have not even read the standard, not
many, but we would like to educate them. There was one who made the
excuse for not using a particularly nice dog, "That dog had too much
reach for me". To this day, those of us who were there are bewildered.
So, let's start there, Pam. What do you mean by over-reach ?

                                  Respectfully,
                                             Carolyn

culzeans1@xxxxxxx wrote:We need more judges who actually read and understand
the standard and PUT up the best dog, period.?The dog should be balanced,
nothing over done in any area. The shepherd movement is one of grace, power
and
stamina. Anything over done detracts from that. To over reach is incorrect
with
or without crabbing. The more I learn, the more I learn, the more I learn and
the more I learn....? I have been studying Kathy Shaw's articles and I am
amazed at how many different "types" of shepherds there are and not suprising
is the arguing over who has the "right" or "correct" dog according to the
standard. If you look at what she illustrates according to the standard, most
of us have a dog that fits into the standard, more or less, some much less
than
more. It really comes down to what we want our shepherds to do. If all you
want
is a dog with a great side gait, well that is what you get. Over reaching
accomplishes that. I want a dog that more than
anything can do everything, even go into
the water and retrieve that bird if I ask them to. And to accomplish that I
feel I must have a dog right down the middle of the standard. Nothing over
done, no over reaching, no under reaching,?no toe dragging, no hock walking,
no
cow hock,no roach back, no to short stiffled, no to short or to long back, no
to long or to short neck,no block heads, no snipey heads,?good feet and
pasterns, temperament suited to adapt to what ever I ask of them. I know many
people have been in this breed way longer than I have, have a billion more
champions than I do(because I have none yet), feel offended that I even have
an
opinion, but I put my love of this breed up against anyones and I will stand
toe to toe with you because my life has been saved by this breed and I will
stand for the best in them because it is no less than what this noble
incorruptable breed would do for me. I love reading this list because I see
here people who have differences of what our breed should
 look like, but who
have a love for this breed as I do. I have been to shows and been treated
poorly by GSD people and I have been to specialties and had such a wonderful
time, granted they thought my dogs were not "extreme" enough but still people
were pleasant and helpful. I love that the breed I love so?much has so many
people looking after its best interests. Maybe we just need judges who feel
the same.
Pam

Evan,
For the best nighttime pictures of Christmas lights, do the following
(digital or manual camera):

1. Turn the flash off.
2. Use a tripod.

That is the second request. I know I am supposed to know stuff, but how do
you take a picture at night?

I may ask Tedi if she knows what to do to take a picture of the tree, but
 it
would have to be half a block away, I guess.

I'm not trying to one-up you Laura, but when I took my bitch in to the
emergency vet because she waited 4 hours between whelps, I got a call
from my regular vet the next morning (as I was still sleeping on the
floor next to the whelping box).

Mine do <G>. It's common today to have a veterinary referral when seeing a
specialists or going to an ER. In any event, those types of vets do ask for
info on the treating veterinarian and they usually fax something to their
office.

Case in point, I had something small and benign removed from a dog by a
surgeon I know & trust associated w/ a large specialty practice (they don't do
rabies etc., just specialty stuff.) Great gal. The front desk asked me for
the referring vet. Rather than go through a long explanation that I referred
myself, I gave them my house call vet's name. Sure enough, she called that
night to follow up on a dog she'd never met <G>.
