re: message 9 below. In this dog bite case, apparently the dog had already come from the ASPCA, which refused to take him back. I'd be willing to bet that this dog already had shown this same type of behavior and no one corrected it when it happened and that is why he probably ended up in the system in the first place. This dog is probably salvageable, but would take a strong dominant person who would be willing to knock the you know what out of him. Surprisingly a lot of shelter/ASPCA people do not know how to read and discipline a large breed dog. If it wags it's tail it is friendly therefore OK for a family home. Our rescue in N. CA tends to err on the other side, not placing dogs with families with small children. Unfortunately with the BSL rampant nowadays I would recommend the dog be put down as well. I have been bitten by many different dogs throughout my life, usually my fault, ei training problems in a strange dog. My kids have been bitten, some times I saw it coming, sometimes it was a accident For someone not raised with dogs, who doesn't realize the reason, well this could turn them into supporting all breed restrictions in regards to all large dogs. It doesn't take much of a bite! This doesn't sound like a "dangerous dog" in the legal sense. Sounds like a 'disciplinary' bite case to me. I'm not defending the dog - he probably should be euthanized. Not becasue he is a vicious killer but becasuse he has an irresponsible owner who cannot, at least did not, train the dog and establish a proper pack order. Adult dogs dicsipline pups by grabbing the muzzle. Puppies know to fold up, hit the ground, and freeze when grabbed. When kids (fellow pack members and the dog's version of puppies) get grabbed in the face (muzzle), they tend to jerk away - leaving long tears in the face, and leading to reconstructive and plastic surgery. Moms learn bite inhibition so she won't kill her own offspring. Male dogs RARELY learn that bite inhibition to any extent. These disciplinary bites are usually done by intact males and teh vitim is teh owner's own kids. Incidentally, the number one victim of these bites is a five to eight year old boy. That type of behavior usually starts in the "jerky teen" years when the male dog begins to think and act like an adult. In his mind he is now allowed to be pack leader to the 'subordinates" and discipline the kids for improper doggy behavior. Noone bothered to teach this dog that he was NOT ALLOWED to discipline the owners kids. Across the country these disciplinary bites are the number ONE incident of dog bite for animal controls. Personally, unless the owner is willing to do MAJOR training with this dog the best for all parties is to euthanize the dog! Unless this animal ends up with a very knowledgable owner who can teach him he's at teh bottom of teh pack pecking order it will happen again. when knocked down tehse dogs tend to struggle to regain pack dominance and tend to bite with a higher frequency. Sad thing is it will probably happen again with the owner's next intact male. Then the breed, which ever breed the dummy owns, becomes "vicious and not good with children." It is a matter of poor management. Suzanne www.tsalishepherds.com Home of Ch Firedog, Ch Cookie, Ch Flair, BIS/BISS Ch Yancy, and Ch Flash!
