Hi, Were these novice owners? Perhaps that's why novices get the bad rep. I guess I see big time breeders as folks who won't give me the time of day, unless I have some connections already. I tend to stick with the smaller (dog number only) breeders, with less dogs and more personal time for newbies. My guy came from a small, (in number only) but known breeder. He is a great guy (breeder and dog) and I have tried to stand by my word. A few of you have seen me at shows. He's in my house, under my foot, and treated very much like a child. Questions like this steer me away from breeding. There are so many fine breeders already, how could I possible complete with them? At Windy Acres we've finished 16 champions with 3 more very close to finishing (Archie - 10 points, 1 major; Justice - 9 points, 1 major; and NE BIF Luke 15 points, 1 major and too many specialty major reserves to count). So, we're got a small track record but stlll show homes are hard to come by. First of all, I've come to realize (reluctantly but realistically) that many show homes are not good, lifelong homes. I honestly would rather have them in good pet homes than in crappy show homes. In too many show homes dogs get little to no house time, are not properly socialized, and the degree to which they are loved depends on how well they "turn out". Show people are often not reliable. For example, Am/Can Ch Windy Acres' My Oh My OFA H&E was placed in a show home at 4 ½ months of age for $800 and two puppies back. She came back to me 3 months later as "not good enough". I had never received a penny of the $800 and she came back determined that crates where the only place to pee and poop. Now - what does that tell you? The weekend she came back to me we showed her in GSDC of Central MA's specialty and she went best puppy. She then went on to finish easily, win the open class at the GSDCA national and go on to RWB, and was invited to the Eukanuba Classic (she was #10 that year in national ranking). So much for "not good enough." Unfortunately, I've got lots of similar stories I could share but I think this one makes the point. Right now I have a beautiful 4 month old show puppy that was supposed to go to a show home. The show home backed out at the last minute after I reserved and held the puppy for her - she never came to pick up the puppy. Oh well, - maybe this one will go on to win her class at the national we well. Both her parents did - and both sire and dam also have all-breed group I's as well. Since Becky started this thread - maybe she could help the situation by featuring small but successful breeders in her online magazine. There are many small breeders out there that get overlooked in favor of larger scale more prominent breeders. Often we need better dogs than some of the bigger buys in order to win because often the ring politics favor the more prominent breeders. As usual, this is JMO...
