Many years ago I attended a Specialty down in Florida. In the morning the
ring was on the small side. The Judge worked his way thru his entry and awarded
Winners Dog. During lunch, there were so many complaints about the ring size
that the ring ropes were extended for the bitch classes.
The Judge again worked his way thru the classes. It was apparent from the
start of the puppy classes that he was picking balanced, long striding girls.
When it came time for the Breed class, it was apparent how the ring change
had affected the judging. The Winners Dog was balanced and smooth, but very
much
shorter in side gait than the bitch.
If you put a dog with an extreme, suspending side gait in a typical
poodle ring, they don't have enough room to get into "3rd" gear.They start to
get
into it, and then have to slow down for the turn. A shorter striding dog can
get into "3rd" and be fully extended in a smaller ring. He's going to look like
the better strider, he can show his full extention, while the more extreme dog
is hobbled.
Think about when you are walking with your 87 year old great aunt. You
can't walk at your regular speed/gait. Your stride is shoppy, and jerky. You
start to speed up and then slow down. People watching you would not be seeing
you
at your most co-ordinated.
