[ SHOWGSD-L ] rethinking spay and neutering

Just in response to the rethinking of spaying and neutering. I think you can
pull anything out of a research article to make it say what you want it to say.
I know as someone who has written several papers myself you can also only
publish the research results that agree with what your research was trying to
prove. So I do caution people who read these blogs and statements and don't
look at the actual research itself. For example the article about the
Rottweilers living longer with being spayed after 6 years also has the head
researcher saying this, "Does Dr. Waters recommend that every dog owner delay
their pet's
ovariohysterectomy? Not at all. In fact, he cautioned against
overgeneralizing the study findings, saying much more research is
needed."
So yes I do think that some animals benefit from being left intact longer, and
I discuss that with anyone doing any performance events with their animals, but
for the majority of pet owners-I always recommend spaying and neutering at an
early age. Most of my clients can't understand how to house train their dog
and get them to stop stealing the kids food and stay out of the trash. The
number of unplanned dog and cat pregnancies abound in the area that I
practice-and the majority of my clients are college educated and quite
affluent. It doesn't mean they are responsible pet owners that can handle
keeping their dogs intact and avoid an unwanted litter.
