At the national in Dallas in the 60's Lloyd Bracket placed a white dod fourth
in the novice class. I do not
remember the year Lang Skarda finished Gray Boy, a blue. However, I do
remember the reason the white
became a DQ. Back then we did not know much about genes and their effects on
health. Iy was thought
that the white GS had health issues as did (and still do) many breeds. For
example, the breeds which have the merle
gene cannot breed merle to merle because they get whites which are deaf; a
white collie must have a colored
head; a boxer can have only a certain percentage of white; a Cardigan must not
have white surrounding the eye;
the Australian shepherd may not have white on the body behind the withers=;
there are more as most herding breeds
limit the amount of white. Back in the 60s these DQs were (and are) thought to
affect health issues; thus, the
powers that be at that time made the white GS a DQ. Interestingly, it was
also thought that a sable liver GS
carried a lethal gene. Qe now know that white does not indicate health issues.
However, our standard is wrong in calling the livers and blues a serious
fault; they are automatically a DQ because of the nose color.
