I am replying to Zoeâs post, (below), because it was succinct. Also, Zoe
was one of a handful of BOD members who handled herself professionally and
with business-like decorum. (Before anyone asks, yes, I did call in and
listen to the BOD meeting Saturday ⦠even waited when the conference call
line
went down for a little while.) It was quite an interesting meeting and I
really wish that more members had âtuned in.â
Basically, many portions of the meeting were a total free-for-all. There
was no discernable order and everyone was talking over everyone else,
regardless of who had the floor; it was almost embarrassing to listen.
The discussion of the proposal for a change in the GSD Standard is summed
up well in Zoeâs post. Itâs the last line, âRemember that many of these
changes are being done to be more inclusive, to get more people involved and
for economic improvement of clubsââ that really concerns me and that line
is a good summation of the BODâs intent.
At what cost TO THE BREED are we supposed to allow the bastardization of
our standard? Yes, the club is facing some serious financial concerns this
year. Yet, no one seems to want to answer the question as to how we got
here, why we are more concerned about making money than fulfilling the GSDCAâ
s mission statement. WHERE IS/WAS THE FIDUCIARY RESPONSIBILITY OF THOSE
WHO GOT US INTO THIS MESS AND THOSE WHO HAVE PERPETUATED IT? The whole
Centennial/World Trial idea was lovely but so terribly unrealistic and
irresponsible and now we and our dogs are supposed to pay the price of those
who
chose grandstanding over the welfare of the breed? Why?
Do we really need 25,000 seats which will never be filled? Do we need
spotlights and fanfare for which we canât pay? So many poor choices,
decisions made without thought, money spent/being spent with no concern for the
future. Our club has thrown good money after bad into this event and now the
BOD wants the members to bail them out by helping them raise funds by
destroying our standard?
I remember the Diamond Jubilee in 1988 at the National in Houston. It was
WONDERFUL, all about the dogs. The venue was great, there were free
seminars for every area of interest, nice but inexpensive touches were added,
(little âdiamondâ chips on free pens given out with catalogues, etc.), and
we
knew we were attending an event that truly showcased the clubâs pride in
the GSD.
Weâve already seen the Peopleâs Choice, Golden Globes, Producerâs Guild
and Screen Actors/AFTRA award shows ⦠the Oscars are still to come. This
BOD
needs to realize we arenât Hollywood and tone things down NOW to as an
acceptable a level as they can, not run our breed into the dirt because they
wanted their moment in the spotlight.

We are looking at the Standard to include a particular and correct long
coat and possibly whites. AN Ad hoc committee was formed.
Standard changes require the membership to vote. THis is a long process.
THe SV now allow certain long coats to compete in Trials
However, they still do not permit correct coats and long coats to be bred
to each other.
Remember that many of these changes are being done to be more inclusive, to
get more people involved and for economic improvement of clubs
