It is such a puzzle really why some owners cannot have a dog that lives to be
old. For example, my brother in Vegas, has had 4 of my dogs. His first lived
to be 13 [great]. 2nd to 5 [DM]. 3rd to 8 [Diabetes]. 4th to 12 [good]. The
first, 3rd and 4th dogs were my bloodlines, top and bottom. The 2nd was from
my dam but sired by an outside stud dog. DM & Diabetes [brought on by using a
cancer medication for periannal fistula]. I felt really bad for my brother and
worked really hard to try to find answers, for I kept one of the siblings to
the 3rd dog, and she ultimately became the best bitch I ever produced, living
into her 14th year and producing solid healthy pups over and over again.
My conclusion leans towards the dog's environment and health-care. I do think
a lot of owners do not know how to care for dogs [house-feed-support & train].
I think they are too slow to react when something appears suspicious, or they
simply cannot recognize a problem when it faces them because they have little
knowledge on the subject.
Other environments...If your water comes from a well, was it tested? Are the
dogs ignored and outside or are they living in the home and worked? What
quality of food? Yeah, you can tell this really bothered me.. 50% of the pups
that went to my brother were defective. Absolutely unacceptable.

So as I continue reading the consensus is that the GSD lifespan now
9-10? As I read the older GSD Reviews and todays I see that coming
into play as correct today. Yes, some are living older but most I am
seeing are being lost before 9. I have had many friends losing their
GSD's ages 2-6 due to various cancers or DM 5-8. These dogs were
not pet breeders either but did the testing for ED and HD. The breeder
I got my last GSD from tests for everything even diseases that the GSD
is not known to get yet.
