Our youngest daughter had to have the vaccine against rabies for a feral cat
bite.
The vaccine is now all incorported into one shot in the butt....no longer in
the stomach
and no longer a "series" of shots. That has been about 20 years.

The most difficult part of that entire experience was finding a source to get
the shot.
We went through several Dr.'s......and several people at the County Health Dept
and finally found a Dr. on call at the local Hospital that knew what to do and
spent
a lot of time getting availablity of the serum for us. He had to make a lot
of calls to
do so and was pretty surprised himself at the lack of knowledge or availability.
NONE of the others were prepared as far as having the serum on hand, the
protocol,
or very much knowledge, on where to even go to get it at that time. We live
in an
area of LOTS of wildlife including skunks and racoons. I was really
surprised at
the lack of knowledge or preparation.
SURELY things have improved since then?

Not so funny part of THAT experience was actually having a local Dr. that was
on
call for OUR Dr. who was out town at the time tell us :
"not to worry about it unless she started exhibiting symptoms"......!!!! I
kid you not!!

??? -- Please help me here! I am from the old school and have had dog
bites etc. off and on all my life.
Not sure, but I thought the human did NOT get any kind of "rabies shots"
unless, during the 10 day periiod
the animal showed signs of the ailment! Then, a series of shots were given.
Well, it's been so long since
I've even let anyone know of any bites I've had, guess I really am "old
school and old uninformed"! BTW -
wouldn't the Vet records of Congo and/or his K9 family show if there was a
lax in this dept.? Surely the
James family, owning multiple dogs, would keep up with their check ups etc.
  I really thought that ONLY
IF THERE WAS A QUESTION - would these really tough shots be given to a
  human!! I'm lost on all
of this but certainly would like to know more on what is and/or is not
required for BITES and what is
or is not needed for same. WOW and really a double wow to me?? Norma
  no L

When I went through the post-exposure rabies series the first shots you were
given were given according to size.
I know I got about 6 shots that first day. After that it was a single rabies
vaccine over a period of days.
Kaiser followed the WHO rules and gave me a final shot at the end of 3
  months, I believe.

But even being heavy, I did not receive a total of more than about a dozen
  or so.
But every time someone talks about a dog bite victim getting rabies shots
they throw in some huge number.
Since the shot number is off, I bet the bite number is also. Ruth

Did any of you read this article about Congo? Did anyone else notice
that they said the gardener was bitten 96 times and had to have 65
  rabies shots????????
Since when would anyone be given 65 rabies shots?
