is, is it dangerous, etc, and where to get it. Alum is a strong astringent, used in medicine. I doubt it will hurt anything on any animal...but it is the very astringency of it that makes the dog (or horse) not want to taste it again after the first time. Getting it...if nowhere else, it can be found on line...at least in powder form. Using it to prevent chewing is an old-time horseman's trick -- I have no idea what a vet would say...probably the vet would try to sell you Vetwrap and one of those huge collars... but try the alum. I have never put it on an open sore, but I've put it all around an open sore..... Look -- nobody has to try it. It was just a suggestion.
