It is not at all uncommon. White in GSDs is a "masking" gene. So underneath
that white (genetically speaking) is another color. In the case of these
pups it was obviously sable for at least one of the parents.
I'd be going after the property owner/tenant for abandonment! grrrrrrr. So
happy the woman was there to save them!

The puppy is much better and the bloated tummy has gone down. Thanks to
those who responded .
This puppy that I picked up tonight is a pretty sable and he has a white
brother . A lady rescued him and his brother from a pen in a weed covered
field where the people had moved and abandoned them when they were 3 months
old . His brother was white . She found a forever home for the brother then
got worried about the kind of people that were wanting them so she sent them
to rescue.
I know that the sable dominance thing has been discussed, but I was
wondering if it was common for a litter to have both sables and whites . I
won't even pretend to know anything about sables <G>. I have a picture of
him and his brother . They were the same age . I suppose it could have been
two different litters . ???
