I don't think how well cared for they are has anything to do with it. Whatever it is is something that occurs naturally in reptiles and amphibians...it doesn't make them sick at all...but it can be dangerous to humans and other pets. Not all of them have it, probably...and I'm not sure it was salmonella...it was some kind of micro organism that they carry naturally...internally AND on their skin........ Iguanas were mentioned specifically, as well as several kinds of turtles and lizards......
