I couldn't have said it better myself. The politics in the specialty ring are
VERY apparent and a lot of our specialty judges reward their friends and the
handlers. That is one reason why, IMO, the specialties are lacking in entries
and more majors are found at all-breeds. I've never really specialed a dog
with a top specialty handler and 11 champions later I've only been awarded one
specialty best of breed (and I've shown animals that won/placed in classes at
the national, won a maturity, etc.) It's not that they weren't worthy of a
BOB, but the politics weren't on my side. If those same animals had been
specialed by a top specialty handler, I'm sure I wouldn't have enough fingers
and toes to count the specialty BOB's.
And, as far as the small all-breed ring - a correctly put together dog can
handle any size ring with coordination and grace. And, any judge worth their
salt can tell evalutate motion and determine who moves better, regardless of
the ring size. No, it's not my preferred venue, either, and it's not nearly as
pretty or as exciting as watching our breed move out in a large, grassy ring,
but it can be done. A good judge can evaluate motion, even at a walk...
