I did not "go to a white gsd breeder" ....I was unsure of the genetics of the
"panda" markings, and noticed from the websites people had posted on the list
that the people who were promoting them also had whites.....and to be honest I
was never really sure how the white gene worked either...knew it was recessive
but did not understand the masking part, and on one of the websites someone on
the list posted about the panda shepherds I noticed a sable gsd who was out of
a white and a black and tan (?), which I totally did not understand since from
what I knew sable is supposed to be dominant over all...so I googled "white
german shepherd color genetics" and checked out a few sites to get more info on
the off colors....what better place to find info on the genetics of off colors
than on a website from someone who is actively trying to breed for them? Who
else would have better info on off colors than either those who have had those
problems in their lines and are trying to avoid
them, or those who are actually trying to get off colors! And lets be honest,
how many reputable conformation breeders have info on their websites on how to
get (or not get) undesireable colors? I dont think any of us advertise any
faults or problems that are lurking in our lines for that matter! (And I know
the "Panda" marking, or white spotting factor ARE in top show lines right now
and they do pop up every now and then in top quality litters! But obviously no
serious show breeder advertises this fact or breeds them for God's sake!) But
these people who are trying to get the "exotic" colors are proud of it and
advertise all kinds of info on how they get them! Having been lucky enough to
have never had any whites, blues, livers, blk/silvers, or "pandas" in the 30+
years we have been breeding, I have never had to be overly concerned with off
colors.....but with all the talk of pandas I was kind of curious so I looked it
up....and that is my random thought process...like I
said....too much time on my hands in the middle of the nite I guess lol! I
tell everyone I finally got my newborn baby to sleep through the nite, but now
I can't lol!

I don't think going to a "white GSD breeder" is the right source to go
to..........<G>

You can get the same markings RIGHT NOW TODAY on some current SHOW LINES
if you are not careful. It is not a mutation. It is a fault that she is
going back INTO
instead of AWAY from.
You start getting white feet.....white tips on the tail.....a white blaze on
the face that can
go away...or not......you are tinkering on the edge of getting a "world famous
PANDA GSD".
<G>
You could do the same with some lines that will give you the 'bowed' front legs
and
continue to breed INTO that until you got Daschund legs.........as a breeder
you have
"tools"....you decide how to utilize them. "Stay with the
program"........or become
a genius at marketing. <G>
Please do not make the mistake of thinking of this as "rare" "unique" or a
"rare mutation".
It just sounds way to glamorous.
In horses this color and markings is called PIEBALD.... name not so glamorous
...eh? <G>

Was curoius (and obviously have too much free time on my hands!) so googled
white shepherd genetics looking for more info on the "panda" and actually found
a website with some good info on color genetics....it is a white gsd breeder,
so the opinions on the different colors are of course not what I agree with,
but it does explain the mutations and white factor well. I know all about the
colors we WANT, but since I have never actually had them in any litters, I have
always been a little hazy on the genetics of blues and livers and whites, and
now "pandas", (which is actually a mutated white spotting factor)
