[ SHOWGSD-L ] overbooking rooms

A lot of places in Europe now charge for one night (or more) when you make
your reservation. There opinion is that you don't make a reservation without
being sure. WHY should they "hold" a room for you for free and turn other
people away?
Because of abuses to the system, there are now also, there are places in the
U.S. that once you book, you pay up front (sometimes for the entire stay)
and there is NO refund. Our son goes to West Point and all the hotels close
to
the Academy are like that (besides the Army lodge). You book, you pay.
I've also heard that with at least one of them, you can't even "resell" your
reservation to someone else. ONLY the person who made the reservation is
allowed to check-in.
I think eventually all hotels will go to one of these policies if people
continue to book & cancel.

I think they should be charged a nigbhts fee for every room they book and
let go. That would make them think before they book.
