Peggy, can you explain what you mean by "not allowed" in Collies? Do you
mean not mentioned in the Standard? Sable merles are not listed in the
Standard, but they are shown and do finish. I have even known a couple of
sable merles with blue eyes that have finished. The Collie Standard doesn't
expressly prohibit them... it says "Except for Blue Merles the eyes must be
matched in color". Brown is preferable.

Sable merles in Shelties have finished, but they must have brown eyes.

Both the Sheltie and the Collie Standards do not mention Sable Merles.
There are two ways of looking at this.... One, since it isn't mentioned it
shouldn't be allowed. Two, since it isn't mentioned, there is no rule
against it. Pick your camp, LOL!

Since I have never bred a breed with merles, I'm not an expert on
this...but breeding merle to merle can result in deafness and other
things, or so I understand...many merles are bred to tricolours...
Because the Collie does have and accept, altho not allow, sable merles,
obviously somewhere along the way there have been sables bred to merles,
too... and sable merles are bred to regular sables all the
time.............
Sable merle collies are very hard for most people to spot, unless
the dog has a blue eye.......
Cardigan Corgis have explicit rules regarding colour....and the
allowable colors are somewhat different.
