Since I have never bred a breed with merles, I'm not an expert on this...but breeding merle to merle can result in deafness and other things, or so I understand...many merles are bred to tricolours... Because the Collie does have and accept, altho not allow, sable merles, obviously somewhere along the way there have been sables bred to merles, too... and sable merles are bred to regular sables all the time............. Sable merle collies are very hard for most people to spot, unless the dog has a blue eye....... Cardigan Corgis have explicit rules regarding colour....and the allowable colors are somewhat different.
