Yes I would use the furminator too or a comb.  If she can't climb stairs, 
then she is probably feeling achy - arthritis?  If she isn't staying still, 
I'd just lie on the floor with her or couch until she's relaxed and calm, 
then brush or comb her a little at a time, still keeping relaxed and maybe 
massaging her.

My oldest passed away last year at over 15 yrs and she was uncomfortable, so 
I had to make it as pleasant as I could.
