When I heard the report they said that "washing" wouldn't prevent it  because 
they suspected it came through the roots after contaminated water was  used 
to irrigate the fields.  Cooking should certainly kill the e-coli as  long as 
you bring it to the temperature needed to kill the bacteria.  My  problem is I 
eat raw spinach salad all the time so cooking isn't an option  :-(
