[ SHOWGSD-L ] off topic - solar lights

I know this will be a stupid question, but I really would like to 
know...........  Does anyone know if solar lights  have to actually be 
in SUNSHINE to work?
 Will bright days be enough, or must they actually be in the sun for 
most of the day?
